Here is what actually happens, what the research says, and how to think about NMN if you drink.
How Alcohol Burns Through NAD+
When you drink, your liver clears ethanol in two steps. First, alcohol dehydrogenase converts ethanol to acetaldehyde, the toxic intermediate responsible for much of the damage and the hangover. Second, aldehyde dehydrogenase converts acetaldehyde to harmless acetate. Both steps convert NAD+ into NADH.
The result is a sharp shift in your liver's NAD+/NADH ratio. In biochemistry terms this is called reductive stress, and it has knock-on effects well beyond the liver:
- Fatty acid oxidation slows down, which is why regular heavy drinking drives fat accumulation in the liver
- Gluconeogenesis is impaired, contributing to unstable blood sugar after drinking
- Lactate builds up as the body tries to regenerate NAD+
- Sirtuins and PARP repair enzymes, which depend on NAD+, have less of it to work with
In short, alcohol temporarily pushes your cells in the exact opposite direction that NMN supplementation is trying to move them.
Does Drinking Cancel Out Your NMN?
Moderate, occasional drinking does not erase the benefit of consistent NMN use. NAD+ depletion from a few drinks is transient, and levels recover within hours to a day as the alcohol is cleared. What matters is the pattern. Daily or heavy drinking keeps the NAD+/NADH ratio chronically skewed, and no supplement dose meaningfully offsets that.
It is also worth being honest about what the evidence covers. Human NMN trials, including the Yoshino 2021 study and the 2022 Japanese trials on sleep and fatigue, excluded heavy drinkers and did not test alcohol interactions directly. Animal studies suggest NAD+ precursors support acetaldehyde clearance and protect against alcohol-induced liver stress, but that has not been replicated in human trials yet.
Can NMN Help With Hangovers?
Mechanistically it is plausible. Acetaldehyde clearance is rate-limited partly by NAD+ availability, so topped-up NAD+ could, in theory, help your liver process alcohol slightly faster. Some users report milder mornings after drinking since starting NMN. Treat those reports as anecdote, not data. No controlled human study has tested NMN as a hangover remedy, and anyone selling it that way is ahead of the science.
What NMN clearly does not do is protect you from alcohol's other effects: disrupted sleep architecture, dehydration, and acetaldehyde exposure still happen with or without it.
How to Time NMN Around Drinking

- Occasional moderate drinking does not cancel consistent NMN use
- Chronic heavy drinking keeps NAD+ suppressed, and no supplement offsets it
- NMN as a hangover aid is mechanistically plausible but unproven in humans
- Keep your normal morning dose. Do not megadose around drinking sessions
